Nobel Prize committee calls for “definitive release” of Narges Mohammadi

CSDHI – Following Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi's temporary release from Evin Prison, the Nobel Committee has called for the permanent release of the human rights activist.

Referring to Narges Mohammadi's illness, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Jürgen Wattne Friedniss, said on Wednesday, December 5: “We call on the Iranian authorities to ensure that she has access to appropriate medical treatment for her illness by ending his imprisonment permanently. »

Narges Mohammadi was released from prison for three weeks to attend to her medical affairs after “a tumor operation and a bone graft.”

On December 5, Mostafa Nili, Narges Mohammadi's lawyer, announced the news on the social network “X” and wrote that his client was released from prison “due to his physical condition after a tumor removal and a bone graft that took place 21 days ago.”

Meanwhile, the steering committee of the Narges Freedom Coalition, in a statement, welcomed the temporary release of the imprisoned human rights activist, calling for her “complete and unconditional release.”

According to the statement, which was posted on the Narges Mohammadi Foundation page, Narges Mohammadi recently underwent “a complex surgery to remove a bone lesion in his leg suspected to be cancerous” and his three-week medical leave was taken “despite a request for three months of medical treatment by the treatment team.”

According to Mostafa Nili, “the removed tumor was benign,” but Narges Mohammadi should be “examined every three months.”

In this regard, last week, Vida Rabbani, a journalist incarcerated in Evin prison, reported in a letter that Narges Mohammadi had suffered from a “bed sore” following his recent operation, and wrote that the authorities of Evin Prison had failed to pay attention to Narges' “heavy surgical injury, bedsores, contaminated rooms and bathrooms, lack of medical facilities” and other problems.

Imprisoned student activists Vida Rabbani and Motahareh Gouei have been on hunger strike since November 19 to protest the failure of Evin prison authorities to resolve the situation of Narges Mohammadi and other political prisoners, such as Varsheh Moradi.

Additionally, in recent months, many civil and human rights organizations and activists have called for the immediate release of the Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The US State Department has repeatedly called on the Iranian government to end attacks on human rights defenders and release all unjustly detained prisoners, including Narges Mohammadi.

The judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic use the medical deprivation of certain political prisoners as a means of pressure against these prisoners.

Narges Mohammadi, who has been arrested and imprisoned several times over the past two decades, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for “propaganda against the state” in the latest court case and is being held in Evin Prison, in Tehran.

During his sentence, he was the subject of numerous prosecutions by the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic.
