Téji Savanier and Montpellier have enraged supporters over the past 24 hours.
The season of Montpellier couldn't be worse. THE MHSC was eliminated in the round of 32 of the French Cup by a team of National 2Le Puy, yesterday. The match wasn't very close either: The men of Jean-Louis Gasset were convincingly beaten 4-0 by the amateur team. As a reminder, the Héraultais are currently bottom of Ligue 1.
However, an interaction between club captain Téji Savanier and supporters sparked outrage. The Hérault captain uttered a sentence which risks making some supporters cringe. La Paillade. This happened while he was being questioned just before taking a corner.
“Last in Ligue 1 doesn’t hurt? When you earn 210,000 euros per month it’s okay!” Savanier retorted. All this was taken on video by a group of supporters and was then posted on X. After widespread anger from Montpellier supporters, the club on social media proceeded to publish a post celebrating Téji's 33rd birthday Savanier today.
The reactions lived up to expectations. “Player who doesn’t care about the club as long as he has his salary – shame.” said a user. “When you are captain of your team and thousands of kids wear your name on the jersey, you can't behave like that. This is not the spirit of sloppiness!” – remarked another supporter.
Montpellier must now get back to work on January 4 with a match against Olympique Lyonnais outside. The task is not easy for MHSC supporters…
