Fiber deployment: this region is working hard to catch up
In France, nearly 90% of households are eligible for optical fiber. And the 100% objective will not be achieved in 2025. And for good reason: in territories where the deployment of fiber is almost complete, the sockets that remain to be connected are the most complex. Furthermore, in certain regions, the deployment of optical fiber has fallen too far behind schedule.
This is particularly the case in Brittany. In an interview given to the Bretagne économique site, the President of the region Loïg Chesnais-Girard assures that the deployment of optical fiber in his region will be completed “by the end of 2026“. “It is the commitment and all of Brittany will be 100% fiber optic. When in other regions it stops at 95%, for us it will be 100%. Which means that the house at the end of the road, in many cases a farm, will be connected to fiber. This is part of the common goods that we absolutely must preserve in the four corners of Brittany. It’s an asset for tomorrow!“, he assures.
In Brittany, with a fiber coverage rate of 66.5%we are still very far from the objective. He has no less than 1.4 million sockets to be connected by the end of 2026.
Launched in 2016, the project quickly fell behind schedule. But he has now found his cruising speed. “On November 1, 2024, we passed the number of 750,000 sockets installed, indicates Loïg Chesnais-Girard. Currently we spend 25 million euros per month“. This therefore means that the region spends nearly a million euros every day in the deployment of fiber. This shows that Brittany is now giving itself the means to complete the deployment of fiber as quickly as possible. fiber.
For information: lThe Brittany Very High Speed project costs 1.66 billionfor a 100% public network, financed to the tune of 77 million euros by Europe.
Department by department, where is the deployment of fiber in this region?
On the occasion of its major annual meeting, Avicca, an association which brings together communities committed to the digital cohesion of territories, indicated that in 45 departments, fiber coverage was close to 100%.
This is still far from being the case in the Breton departmentsaccording to the latest statistics from Arcep, the telecoms regulatory authority, as of June 30, 2024:
