An unnecessary and risky announcement. This is essentially the reaction of many observers after Donald Trump’s threat to introduce 100% customs duties against the Brics member countries (a group initially made up of Brazil, Russia, India, of China and South Africa, expanded to four other countries in 2024), if they were to create a common currency aimed at competing with the hegemony of the dollar in international trade.
In a message posted in particular on the social networkis December, the American president-elect demanded from Brics a “engagement” not to support any currency aimed at “replace the powerful American dollar”, at the risk of having to “expect to say goodbye” to the American market.
A “unnecessary provocation”, titre Bloomberg, because the dollar is not really threatened. While it is true that the BRICS have called for reform of the international system, dominated by the dollar, the countries have not reached any agreement on the subject.
