Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, incarcerated since November 2021, was released on Wednesday for three weeks for medical reasons, her defense announced on X.

“According to the opinion of the forensic doctor, the Tehran prosecutor’s office suspended the execution of Narges Mohammadi’s sentence for three weeks and she was released from prison,” said her lawyer, Me Mostafa Nili.

Against the compulsory veil

Narges Mohammadi, 52, has been repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for 25 years for her commitment against compulsory veiling for women and against the death penalty. She spent much of the last decade in prison.

“The reason for his release is his physical condition after the removal of a tumor and a bone graft, carried out 21 days ago,” stressed Mr. Nili. “The tumor removed was benign, but Narges Mohammadi must be examined every three months,” said his lawyer.

“Insufficient” release

The three-week suspension is “insufficient”, his relatives and supporters reacted on Wednesday, demanding his “unconditional release” or “at least a three-month suspension”.

“After a decade of imprisonment, Narges needs specialized medical care in a safe environment,” the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said in a statement. She requests “his immediate and unconditional release or at least an extension of the suspension of his sentence to three months”.

In June, the Iranian activist was sentenced to another year in prison for “propaganda against the state”. She had refused to attend the hearing of her trial after unsuccessfully requesting that it be open to the public.

War on women

In March, the activist broadcast an audio message from prison, in which she denounced a “large-scale war against women” in the Islamic Republic.

In Iran, women have been required to follow a strict dress code requiring them to hide their hair in public places since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

Narges Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, notably for his fight against the death penalty.
