A decree published in the official journal of December 3, 2024 recognizes the state of natural disaster in the territory of the commune of Rivière-Pilote. The text refers to the rise in water levels that occurred between September 9 and 10.
Martinique had been placed on orange alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms. In some places the water had risen to 1.50 m.
Already accustomed to this type of situation, local residents reacted quickly to the sounding of the siren. Which had not completely prevented some inevitable damage.
30 days to do what is necessary
For all of these phenomena, affected persons who hold an insurance policy guaranteeing their property against fire damage or any other damage can benefit from natural disaster coverage. These insurance policies are generally called “comprehensive”.
Motorists and all motor vehicles benefit from this insurance, if they are insured for fire or damage. Policyholders have a maximum period of 30 days from the date of publication of the decree, i.e. until January 6, 2025, to declare their direct material damage to their insurance company (damage caused to buildings, goods, equipment, furniture or harvested crops).
This period is also 30 days for declarations of operating losses following the event for professionals holding a guarantee or policy covering operating or profit losses.
As a reminder, policyholders who have only subscribed to the mandatory minimum guarantee, known as civil liability, cannot benefit from the “natural disaster” guarantee.
