Resignation of Carlos Tavares, what future for Stellantis?

The CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, resigned this Sunday evening, December 1st. A surprise for the employees of and Trémery, and a concern shared by the members of the CFTC union.

“We are in a waiting phase,” says Patrice Welter, member of the CFTC of Trémery, “we are worried about the future of Stellantis. » A central question concerns the group's employees: that of the closure of factories in . Carlos Tavares had committed to non-closure, but it is difficult for them to believe it now. A PMT (Medium Term Plan) had been established, but there is no guarantee that the next director general will leave it as is.

Who to succeed Carlos Tavares?

This is the second question that concerns the group members. “It could be an American, an Italian, we don’t know who will be at the head of Stellantis,” asks Pascal Lucchini, member of the CFTC in Metz. And not all potential bosses have the same intentions. “Carlos Tavares highlighted French factories, for the future, we no longer have any guarantees,” laments Pascal Lucchini. No date or name has been announced to succeed Carlos Tavares. The board of directors plans new management by the first half of 2025.

A rather positive assessment

If the future is cloudy, the assessment has been made, and it is rather positive. “Mr. Tavares did a good job,” remembers Patrice Welter, “he saved PSA and created Stellantis. » If the business leader had a reputation for using harsh management methods, for others he would have set things right. As a reminder, the automobile group had achieved the best performance in the CAC40 in 2023, with a 59% increase in investments. “He did a lot for us, even if he ultimately pushed things too far,” admits Pascal Lucchini. 10 years after his arrival at the head of the alliance, Carlos Tavares let go of the controls. The coming weeks are likely to be decisive for the future of Stellantis and its factories.
