FIRE. The Saint-Georges fire safety service (SSI) responded on December 3 around 7 p.m. to a fire in a trailer near a housing block on 16th Street.

When firefighters arrived, they quickly noticed that two 100-pound propane tanks were on fire. “We had a very bright and powerful flame when we arrived. Since propane was involved, we opted for a defensive strategy, working from a distance with several jets to protect the nearby building. The trailer was about six feet from a housing block,” explains Frédéric Morin, director of the Saint-Georges SSI.

The work of the engineers was arduous. The twenty men on site left the scene around 10 p.m. “When we have propane tanks on fire, we have to let the gas burn. We must not extinguish the flame to let the gas burn,” explains Mr. Morin. A surveillance team remained on site throughout the night. “There was a little propane left in the tanks, but there was nothing dangerous. Our presence was mainly preventive. The two cylinders were recovered this morning. »

To ensure safety in the surrounding area, three buildings near the trailer were evacuated during the intervention. 16th and 17th streets were also closed as a preventative measure. Damage to the apartment building near the trailer was minimal. There were no injuries during the intervention. The cause of the fire was still unknown at the time of writing.
