One last interview to try to save the furniture? This Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Michel Barnier received Gilles Bouleau, presenter of the TF1 news, and Anne-Sophie Lapix, his colleague from France 2, at Matignon to talk about the motions of censure which target him and which should bring him down in a few hours.
The Prime Minister then raised several subjects, including one which made him very angry:
“There is also the recent decision of the far-left group to make a proposal that I have here to abolish the offense of advocating terrorism…”, he said, not being able to finish his sentence since Gilles Bouleau tries to interrupt him :
“Let’s get back to practicality”said the journalist to calm the politician.
Michel Barnier cut by Gilles Bouleau
But there is no question for Michel Barnier not to talk about this subject. “I am finishing, because I mean we need to know who is going to be with whom, in solidarity with whom?”
he says.
Threatened with being overthrown by the two opposition blocs (the National Rally and La France Insoumise), Michel Barnier clarified that it was still possible that the deputies would not vote on these motions of censure, indicating that “each one has a share of responsibility, a reflex of responsibility, before the French. The best interests of the country mean something. It is not a question of political survival”.
The Prime Minister tries to save his place
And to try to understand the extent of the damage if he were thus forced to leave his post as Prime Minister,
Michel Barnier explains that 18 million French people
“would see their income tax increase”.
“Others will pay for the first time because we have not been able to include the planned re-indexing in the finance law. It is inevitable”. A “instability” who will, according to his words, “immediately” consequences on “interest rates”. Alarmist explanations which show to what extent the Prime Minister no longer has his political future in his hands. But it is indeed among those of the deputies. The motions of censure must be voted on within a few hours. Time for Michel Barnier to reverse the trend?
