It's one of the most cult films of the 90s that Tim Burton fans lovet (re)see at Christmas. Edward Scissorhands is a staple of the director's filmography, to the point that fans are hoping for a sequel.
Edward Scissorhands plunges us into the heart of a fictional neighborhood resembling Wisteria Lane, in which there is a mysterious castle at the end of an alley. Peg (Dianne Wiest), a mother who sells cosmetics, decides to go there and discovers a young creature therewith disheveled hair but who mostly has scissors for hands. She then decides to adopt him and call him Edward. Except that this young man quickly becomes the pariah of this chic neighborhood.
The success ofEdward Scissorhands is imminent upon release, and made by Johnny Depp the Tim Burton cockroacheven though he almost never played this role because of Tom Cruise. A hit that we still see today, so much so that some would like a second part to be released on the big screen. It must be said that Tim Burton did well a sequel to his first film, Beetlejuiceworn by Geena Davis. So why not immerse ourselves in the magical world of Christmas, after taking a trip to the dark Beetlejuice? On this subject, the director has a clear answer.
Will Edward Scissorhands come out of his castle?
It was during a question and answer session at the Marrakech International Film Festival that Tim Burton gave his opinion on Edward Scissorhands 2. « There are certain films that I don't want to make a sequel to he said before continuing, I don't want to make a sequel to this film because I feel like it’s a unique film.«
Edward Scissorhands will therefore never have a second part, like another Tim Burton feature film. “ I also don't want to follow up on The Nightmare Before Christmas because I also feel like it's a unique film. Some films are better not to make a sequel, and in my opinion, this is one of them.«
Soon a new collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp?
If he refuses to allow Johnny Depp to reprise the role of Edward Scissorhands, he does not rule out making a film with him again. « I'm sure it will happen“, he said in a confident tone, before specifying: “ I never tell myself that I am going to hire this or that actor. I always base myself on the project I'm working on. That's what cinema is. It's about collaboration and sharing ideas with the people around you.«
