Produced from a doctoral thesis defended in 2024, this work by Erwin Dejasse details the artistic connection between the classic masters of American realism (Harold Foster, Alex Raymond and Milton Caniff) and part of Argentine and European comics .
Noting the predominance of narrative approaches in the study of comics, backed by the conviction that the study of drawing should have at least the same weight in the approach to an artistic discipline where the image is predominant, Dejasse’s work is placed on the too sparse shelf of comic strip aesthetics.
Never using jargon, making a constant effort to keep things simple and intelligible, The Silent Music of José Muñoz and Carlos Sampayo is a title which offers a judicious commentary on a work whose importance is primordial within the ninth contemporary Art, which is part of a long line of leading designers (from Caniff to Pratt via Breccia or Jijé, to name just a few), and from which the supposedly difficult approach will undeniably benefit.
« The interest of Erwin Dejasse’s work lies in the harmonious synthesis between theoretical reflection, historical approach and author’s monograph. It is aesthetic reflection which constitutes the common thread of the research, an approach all the more interesting as it has become rare in contemporary stripology. », Estimates Harry Morgan, member of the French Academy of Stripology and as such on the jury of the SoBD Ninth Art Prize.
