Recently exonerated by a Massachusetts jury for a murder he did not commit, Michael Sullivan, 64, was compensated to the tune of thirteen million dollars. But a regulation in this state in the northeast of the United States limits this amount to one million. Unfortunately, if this verdict recognizes his innocence, it will never be able to repair the 27 years spent behind bars, report several American media including AP News.
In 1986, Michael Sullivan was convicted of the murder of Wilfred McGrath, who was found beaten to death and abandoned behind a supermarket. The police had focused their investigation on him after learning that his sister had spent the evening with the victim. During the trial, a suspect testified against him in exchange for dropping murder charges. A police chemist also claimed to have found blood and hair belonging to Wilfred McGrath on a purple jacket belonging to Michael Sullivan.
