While the truce between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect yesterday morning, the clashes have not completely stopped. In a worrying escalation, the Israeli army carried out an airstrike on the village of Baysarieh, in the Saida district of Lebanon. This attack, justified by Israel as a response to “terrorist activity” detected on site, would have targeted a suspected Hezbollah site containing medium-range missiles. The human toll of this new violence is heavy: thirteen Lebanese were killed yesterday, without an official response from Hezbollah having yet been issued.
An attack in defiance of the truce
The Israeli air force struck Baysarieh, claiming to have identified a strategic threat. Intelligence reportedly revealed the presence of a missile depot and activity attributed to Hezbollah. This attack comes in a context where Israel had nevertheless agreed to cease hostilities as part of a truce concluded under international mediation.
The Israeli army spokesperson said the strike was aimed “to neutralize immediate threats to Israel’s security.” However, this justification risks aggravating regional tensions and further weakening the ceasefire agreement.
Violations reported by the Israeli army
In a recent statement, the Israeli army said it had identified several individuals suspected of violating the terms of the ceasefire in southern Lebanon. These people, who arrived in vehicles in different areas, were reportedly targeted by Israeli fire. The army specifies that its forces remain deployed in southern Lebanon and will continue to actively intervene against any violation of the truce agreement.
Separately, the Israeli military said an interceptor was launched following the identification of a suspicious aerial target in Lebanon. However, after analysis, it turned out to be a false alarm.
A worrying human toll
The village of Baysarieh, located in the Saida district, was seriously affected by this strike. Several civilian homes were damaged, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in southern Lebanon. Among the thirteen Lebanese victims recorded yesterday, some are believed to be civilians, although the exact circumstances of their deaths remain unclear.
This attack also caused panic among residents of the region, already affected by recent clashes. Several families fled to safer areas, fearing a resumption of large-scale hostilities.
Hezbollah remains silent
Despite this attack, Hezbollah has not yet officially reacted. This silence could indicate a cautious strategy to avoid immediate escalation, although the Shiite group has intensified its military preparations along the border.
