Dries Mertens drew compliments from his coach Okan Buruk. The Belgian impresses at 37 years old in the colors of Galatasaray.
Who said Dries Mertens was too old for the top level? Despite tough competition in attack, the Belgian is having a very decent season and is even gaining momentum, with 4 goals and 7 assists in 19 matches in all competitions.
Surrounded by players like Batshuayi and Osimhen, Mertens has the luxury of being essential, particularly in Europe where he started in Galatasaray’s first four games. “It’s his third season here and he’s getting younger with each passing day,” rejoices his coach Okan Buruk at a press conference before the match against Feyenoord.
“People expect him to get older, but he’s just getting younger. He’s better every day and so valuable to us, not just in his goals (his last one was October 4, ed.) but in his game , quite simply,” says Buruk.
Dries Mertens announced last season that he would stop at the end of this 2024-2025 season, but has since revised his plans and seems determined to continue beyond next June. Recently, he even assured that if Tedesco really needed him, he could call him.
Not yet officially ex-Red Devil, therefore, Mertens has not been called up since 2022 and the World Cup in Qatar. There is little chance of this changing…
