Belkin recalls external battery for Apple Watch

Belkin, a major accessories manufacturer, has just issued a recall regarding one of its external batteries. In a warning posted on its website, the company asks all users of a BoostCharge Pro battery to stop using it on the field.

Launched in 2023, the BoostCharge Pro battery is designed to recharge a Apple Watch and another device equipped with a USB-C port simultaneously. To charge the devices, the battery has a 10,000 mAh accumulator.

A manufacturing defect at Belkin

The manufacturer highlights a “manufacturing defect”. This defect is likely to result in “overheating of the lithium cell of the wireless portable battery charger, which may pose a fire hazard
for consumers »and this, in “certain circumstances”.

“No injuries have been reported and no other Belkin wireless chargers or other Belkin products are affected by this recall”reassures Belkin.

If you purchased a BoostCharge Pro battery, you must stop using it and disconnect it urgently “from any source of power or other products”. Do not leave the battery plugged into a wall outlet, computer or power strip. Likewise, your Apple Watch should not be placed on the wireless base.

Instead, place the device “in a safe, dry place, away from from any flammable object or object likely to damage the external battery ». Above all, “do not place your external battery in trash or recycling bins”. This risks causing a fire among the rubbish.

How to request a refund?

Once this is done, you will need to contact Belkin in order to obtain a refund. Unsurprisingly, the brand has committed to providing a full refund to all injured buyers. External batteries bearing the model number BPD005 are affected by this recall.

If your battery has the matching code, Belkin prompts you to complete an online recall form. To complete this document, you must enter the serial number of the battery. This number is visible on the back of the accessory, printed in white text, at the top left of the part equipped with an induction charger for Apple Watch.

If the serial number is no longer readable, a “copy of your proof of purchase as well as a photo of the front and back of the external battery” must be attached to the form. You will also need to provide your name, telephone number, postal address and email address. Once your refund request has been processed, you will receive an email containing instructions on the correct method to get rid of the faulty battery.
