LUBBOCK, Texas – Xcel Energy recently announced the implementation of new artificial intelligence-based technology to fight wildfires.

The energy company plans to deploy an AI-powered fire detection system in 11 counties in the Texas Panhandle. This system will use camera stations to identify fires and alert front-line emergency services.

This initiative follows the discovery of Xcel's involvement in the Smokehouse Creek fire, which ravaged more than a million acres in the Panhandle last March, becoming the largest wildfire in the history of Texas.

Xcel Energy also plans to demonstrate this technology next week.

Our Vision

In a context where environmental disasters are becoming more and more frequent, it appears essential to adopt advanced technologies to face the challenges posed by forest fires. The use of artificial intelligence systems to detect and manage these incidents could not only improve the responsiveness of emergency services, but also promote better prevention by allowing continuous monitoring of areas at risk. In this regard, Xcel Energy's initiative highlights the growing importance of technological innovation in protecting our natural resources and keeping vulnerable communities safe.
