High school student indicted for attempted murder after scissor attack

A 16-year-old teenager, student at the Edgar-Quinet high school in Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain), was indicted on Wednesday for attempted murder after attacking a classmate with scissors on Monday. Prosecutor Karine Malara indicated that he had been placed “under judicial supervision […] with temporary placement in a closed educational center.”

The events took place Monday morning, before 10 a.m., in a second grade class. An argument, the reasons for which remain unknown, broke out between the attacker and a 15-year-old student. The teenager stabbed his friend with scissors, injuring him in the face and one arm. Although his life prognosis was not in jeopardy, the victim had to be hospitalized after a rapid intervention by emergency services.

“Psychological disorders”

Placed in police custody, the attacker, an isolated foreign minor living in a shelter, “recognized the materiality of the facts”, according to the prosecutor. The latter, judged “free from mental disorder” and “therefore responsible for his actions”, would however suffer from “psychological disorders”.

Following this incident, the students in the class benefited from specific support within the establishment, which remained open on Monday. Located in the center of Bourg-en-Bresse, the Edgar-Quinet high school is a public establishment which has around 1,300 students divided between the high school and the BTS sections.
