The events took place in an industrial zone of Ibi, around forty kilometers from the center of Alicante, in an expanded polystyrene production factory. The alert was given shortly before 12 p.m.

“Three people died and seven were injured” in the “explosion” of a factory, emergency services in the Valencia region, where Alicante is located, said on X at the start of the afternoon.

Firefighters had previously reported two deaths and two people seriously injured, indicating that one person was also missing.

It was the factory's boiler that could have exploded, again according to the firefighters.

“As a result of this explosion, part of the industrial building collapsed, the roof fell and about half of the building surface fell, which means that some interior walls also collapsed,” according to the same source.

Speaking to MPs, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed “the full support of the Spanish government” to the victims of the accident, as well as to the firefighters and rescue workers working on site.
