Tomatoes continue to plummet on the markets. This week, prices fell further on wholesale fruit and vegetable markets in the south of the country, particularly in the El Oued region, known to be a large producer of this agricultural product between November and April.
They are, according to the specialized Facebook page “All about agriculture”, between 40 and 50 DA per kg. At the beginning of the month, prices exceeded 140 DA per kg on the same markets.
On the one hand, this significant drop in prices relieves consumers heavily penalized by inflation and on the other hand sows panic in agricultural circles. The latter fear a collapse in prices, therefore a crisis in the sector.
This sharp drop is explained, according to the same source, by the abundance of supply. The harvests from farms in the South are maturing one after the other, which is causing the supply on the market to explode.
In the retail markets, the drop will be felt by consumers in the next two days. It is useful to remember that tomato prices exceeded, at the beginning of the month, the threshold of 250 Da per kg. A historic record never reached in the past.
