LLM Siri: What secret is Apple hiding for 2026?

According to Mark Gurman of BloombergApple is developing a new version of Siri that would work like popular chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. The goal is to catch up with other AIs by equipping Siri with more advanced and conversational skills.

Dubbed “LLM Siri” by Apple employees (LLM for Large Language Model), the new Siri is already being tested internally on iPhones, iPads and Macs as a standalone application. If all goes as planned, the new assistant will eventually replace Siri as we know it.

An announcement for the start of the 2025 school year

Apple could announce the new AI as early as 2025 as part of iOS 19 and macOS 16. Operating system updates are expected to launch next September. However, LLM Siri won’t debut until spring 2026, similar to how the company is rolling out Apple Intelligence in dribs and drabs. However, it is not impossible that this calendar could evolve.

Like ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, the new Siri would use advanced LLMs to promote more natural two-way conversations.

Bloomberg’s anonymous sources revealed that LLM Siri would also be able to quickly respond to more ” sophisticated ».

This evolved Siri would rely on new models of artificial intelligence from Apple to act more like a human being and less like a robotic and limited voice assistant. LLM Siri will also use a framework called App Intents to work on third-party apps, adds Bloomberg. Additionally, the new Siri would be able to use key Apple Intelligence features, such as writing and summarizing text.

Apple looking for a seasoned machine learning engineer

To illustrate Apple’s efforts in artificial intelligence, Mark Gurman pointed to a job posting for an engineer in the field of Siri and information intelligence:

« We are looking for a high-caliber Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our dynamic team ”, says the offer. “The ideal candidate will play a central role in evaluating and improving our Apple Intelligence products. It will work with large amounts of real-world data to analyze and suggest changes to the Siri user experience. »

So far, Siri has received a visual overhaul, the ability to answer questions on the device, and a Type to Siri feature. But too often, Apple’s Assistant fails to understand simple queries, misinterprets what it’s asked, or simply abandons the query. These are the weaknesses that Apple must address with any new release. Could a Siri LLM be the solution? We will have to wait until 2026 to find out.
