Fire in a building in Orthez: a tenant implicated following the investigation

On November 18, during the night, a fire broke out in a building located at 6 avenue du Corps-Franc-Pommiès in Orthez. The disaster mobilized around fifty firefighters. Three apartments were destroyed and three people were hospitalized.

Among them, a woman, who had been described in “a state of absolute emergency” according to firefighters’ terminology, had burns on her hands (see our article of November 19).

It was this tenant, aged 47 and who lived on the ground floor of the building, who was implicated at the end of the investigation carried out by the Orthez gendarmerie.

A bottle of bioethanol left near a stove

The forty-year-old was placed in police custody this Monday “for acts of involuntary destruction of the property of others by a clearly deliberate violation of an obligation of security or prudence”, specifies the Orthez gendarmerie.

She would have in fact left a bottle of bioethanol near a stove and its ignition would have caused the fire. “After being heard about the facts, this woman is the subject of a probationary criminal warning,” specifies the gendarmerie. This is an alternative to prosecution which involves recognition of the facts.
