The Manhattan prosecutor’s office said on July 2 that it was open to postponing Donald Trump’s sentencing scheduled for July 11, following his conviction in the trial for concealed payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels, reports the New York Times. This decision comes “in the wake of the US Supreme Court ruling that extended his presidential immunity,” highlights the daily.
Just hours after the Supreme Court decision, Donald Trump’s lawyers wrote to Judge Juan Merchan asking for the historic verdict that found the former president guilty of 34 counts of false accounting to be overturned. They also “asked Judge Merchan to postpone sentencing while he considers their request.”
The sentence was originally scheduled for July 11. “Trump faces up to four years in prison,” recalls the New York daily, but the former president and candidate for the presidential election in November, could however not be punished “than a few weeks of imprisonment or a suspended prison sentence.”
It is ultimately up to the judge to decide whether the sentence should be postponed, and “it is likely that he will do it”, underlines the New York Times.
If Judge Juan Merchan decides to postpone the sentencing date, it will probably not be given until after the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to take place from July 15 to 18 in Milwaukee, where Donald Trump is to be officially sworn in as presidential candidate on November 5.
