Manhattan District Attorney Damian Williams announced his resignation on Monday. Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, had promised his replacement.
Damian Williams, the district attorney of Manhatan, New York, announced this Monday, November 25, his resignation, which will be effective December 13. He made American judicial history by becoming the first African-American prosecutor to occupy this position, since taking office in October 2021. He was then appointed by Joe Biden.
The future tenant of the White House Donald Trump had promised to replace him with Jay Clayton, who served as president of the federal body for regulation and supervision of financial markets. The president-elect of the United States appoints several of his close friends to key positions in his administration.
A key position in American justice
Through a statement, Damian Williams acknowledged that it was “a bittersweet day” for him. “It is bitter in the sense that I am leaving the job of my dreams, at the head of an institution that I love and which is filled with the best civil servants in the world. It is sweet in the sense that I am sure of leaving at a time when the Office is operating at an incredibly high level now and exceeding its already high standards of excellence, integrity and independence,” said the 44-year-old.

“This success is due to the career attorneys, staff members and law enforcement officers of this Office. Working with them during my tenure has been a lifelong privilege,” continued Damian Williams.
The role of Manhattan prosecutor is particularly strategic because the prosecutor's office in this New York district investigates large companies and high-profile cases, such as that concerning the rapper P. Diddy or that of the current mayor of New York Éric Adams, indicted in a corruption case
