Good news for consumers. While concerns about the shopping budget are at the heart of the debates, the Carrefour brand has just made an announcement that will ease the wallet French people. This Monday, July 1, the distribution giant released a press release in which it revealed that it had bought two discount brands, one of which will see its prices reduced considerably.

For several months, the mass distribution market has undergone significant changes. Indeed, the Les Mousquetaires/Intermarché group has bought a certain number of Casino stores in financial difficulty. Thus, to compete with them and with Leclerc, the leader in the sector in France, Carrefour has just acquired 175 new storesdistributed throughout France.

Carrefour: a new acquisition for the number 2 in mass distribution in France

This acquisition is “the most important for Carrefour since the acquisition of Promodès“, in 1999, says CEO Alexandre Bompard. Especially since the group received an exemption for the purchase of stores owned by the Belgian group Louis Delhaize. Indeed, Carrefour announced in mid-June that it had obtained authorization from the Competition Authority to be able to carry out this acquisition, without waiting for their prior validation.

However, the conclusions of the merger control authority are expected by “lat the end of the 2025 quarter”Carrefour says. In the meantime, Carrefour assures that the “competition issues” are limited by “the strong geographical complementarity of the 2 groups“a you”benefit of the operation” forand consumer“. Indeed, the distribution giant intends to lower prices by more than 3,000 references.

Carrefour: these products from Cora stores will drop by 10%

Carrefour has just acquired the brands Cora and Match in France. In total, 60 Cora hypermarkets were purchased, as well as 115 Match supermarkets, most of which are located in the north-eastern quarter of the country. This distribution market represents 22,000 jobs. Alexandre Bompard states in the press release that Carrefour will keep the Match stores as they are, but the Cora stores will now fly under the Carrefour flag.

So, from next October, “each Cora store that will change its name“will lower prices”at least 10% on nearly 3,000 products“. Enabling consumers to fill their shopping carts with products that are cheaper than the 20,000 to 35,000 other products currently offered in hypermarkets.”This project will be presented to the social partners in the coming days.”, explains the CEO of Carrefour.

Carrefour attacks hard discount: Atacadão overshadows Action and Netto

While the Carrefour group continues to position itself on the discount store market, it has also invested in hard discount stores. Since 2024, some French people have discovered the Brazilian brand Wholesale. Bought by the French giant, it offers products at a lower cost. A real boon for consumers who are increasingly concerned about their purchasing power.

Faced with fierce competition from hard discounters, particularly Netto and Action, Atacadão and Carrefour are banking on low prices and products of French origin. According to Alexandre Bompard, who opened the first Atacadão store in Aulnay-sous-Bois on June 20, 70% of the references come from France. Carrefour confirms its number 2 place of mass distribution and is close on the heels of the Edouard Leclerc group, still number 1.
