Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon was jailed in Connecticut on Monday to serve a four-month sentence for obstruction of justice.

A former adviser to Donald Trump was imprisoned this Monday in the United States. And not just any adviser, but the most famous of them all: Steve Bannon.

Steve Bannon was the campaign manager for Donald Trump’s victorious 2016 presidential campaign. He was later named White House chief strategist before being fired for his extreme positions.

Previously, he had been a banker, film producer, radio host and above all a leading thinker of the American and European far right. He was an influential adviser to the Brexit campaign in England. In 2019, he came to Paris to support Marine Le Pen during the European campaign. Marine Le Pen then distanced herself from him.

Why was he imprisoned? Because he is suspected of having played a role in the storming of the Capitol in January 2021. The commission investigating this attempted coup wanted to hear him about his telephone conversations with Donald Trump before and during the events.

Out of loyalty to the former president, he refused to reveal the content of these conversations. He did not respond to the summons and was convicted of obstruction of justice. Those appeals having been rejected, he was to report to a Connecticut prison on Monday to serve a four-month sentence. Which he did. A small crowd of Donald Trump supporters accompanied him to the entrance.
