Quebec Finance Minister Éric Girard provided an economic update last week.

Listen to Michèle Boisvert return to the subject at Philippe Cantin’s microphone.

Among the minister’s decisions, there was the one which raised the minimum age from 61 to 65 years to have a certain import credit.

“That therefore reduces government spending by $887 million over four years. But when we look at what he tells us… In one paragraph, we are told about $3.4 billion in reductions in tax expenditures over five years.

“It’s a decision that they made, this $887 million, but the other is just the harmonization with the federal decision to change the rules on inclusion for capital gains. So two and a half billion dollars in spending cuts don’t really come from a government decision.”

Other topics discussed

  • The government must still revise many tax expenditures to achieve a balanced budget in 2029-2030
  • We also criticize the presentation of the measures as proactive decisions by Quebec when they include automatic adjustments such as tax indexation.
