Are birds threatened by the very high voltage line project? This is what experts wanted to verify in Gard, along the very controversial route of the THT line between Jonquières-Saint-Vincent and Fos-sur-Mer. Ornithologists warn of the risks of electrocution.

The wind and rain have not washed away the will of the ornithologists. Sunday November 24, 2024, they installed 30 bird observation posts between Beaucaire and Fos-sur-Mer. “We are mainly looking for large birds. Those who fly high: cranes, storks, gray herons and the little bustard which lives in this area”, specifies Luc Perrin, opponent of the very high voltage line project in the surrounding area.
The little bustard is a protected species that lives in the Camargue. The very high voltage line disrupts its habitat. “The count makes it possible to confirm that the area which must be impacted by the line if it is installed is an ornithologically rich area and that there are particularly sensitive species which transit or live in the sector”adds Jean-Pierre Trouillas, ornithologist. The operation therefore made it possible to identify the birds that live there all year round.
The Gard and Rhone populations are also disrupted. “It was unthinkable that a line of twice 400,000 volts could see the light of day. In the 1960s, the State said “we are creating the industrial and port zone in Fos-sur-mer, to the west, it There will be the tourist area of Grande-Motte and in the middle, we will protect the Rhône Delta. recalls Anne Collard, winegrower in Beaucaire.
For some, this project is an aberration.
We take the risk of destroying territories with exceptional biodiversity. What are we going to leave to our children and our grandchildren? It’s a massacre.

Kites, chaffinches and common buzzards could be observed that day. Opponents of the very high voltage line project hope that Enedis will reconsider its copy.
