Fear of trouble
In a press release from the prefect of Drôme, which our colleagues from France Bleu reported, the State representative writes that “the anniversary of the death of young Thomas Perotto as well as the recent death of Nicolas Dumas came to exacerbate and revive tensions between groups of opposing ideologies. This recovery has been the subject of numerous campaigns, letters and public declarations for several weeks. leading to fears of significant unrest and ideological clashes in Romans-sur-Isère, Bourg-de-Péage, Crépol and Valence, on November 30.
No demonstration
Our colleagues recall that two demonstrations had been planned in Romans-sur-Isère for Saturday: one from the ultra-right, and one from the left. With the aim of “prevent possible problems on public roads”, the prefect prohibits all gatherings commemorating the death of Thomas or Nicolas, “as well as those in reaction to these gatherings on the grounds of the fight against racism, hatred, Francocide, insecurity or even immigration”.
And this, from Saturday 8 a.m. to Sunday 8 p.m.in the municipalities of Valence, Romans-sur-Isère, Bourg-de-Péage and Crépol.
Two deaths in less than a year
On the night of Saturday November 18 to Sunday November 19, 2023, Thomas, a young 16-year-old rugby player, was fatally stabbed while he participated in a village festival in Crépol. Less than a year later, Nicolas, 22, also a rugby player at RC Romans-Péage, was shot and killed in front of a nightclub in Valencia, during the Halloween party.
