In the trade war between China and the European Union, an agreement is finally on the verge of being found.

They were thought to be irreconcilable. And yet in their disagreement which revolves around the electric car, the European Union and China have ended up reaching an agreement. After rumors that talks between the two sides have stalled over a possible withdrawal of customs duties imposed by the EU on electric vehicles from the Middle Kingdom, it seems that Brussels and Beijing are nevertheless on the verge of finding a solution. In any case, this is what the chairman of the European Parliament’s trade committee said on German radio. And the solution that would have been found to end the trade war between the two continents, although it has not yet been officially confirmed by the European Commissionwould be quite simple: a minimum sales price.

Reduce the competitiveness gap

“We are close to an agreement. China could commit to offering electric cars in the EU at a minimum price”. It is in these terms that Bernd Lange explained the compromise that would have been found. “This would effectively eliminate the competitiveness gap created by unfair subsidies, which is why the surcharges were introduced in the first place.” As a reminder, since October 30, 2024, additional customs duties, in addition to the 10% already applied, have been introduced on electric vehicles manufactured in China. With, according to the manufacturers, and depending on their degree of transparency during the initial investigation, surcharges which can rise up to 35.3%. It now remains to confirm the statements regarding the potential agreement, and wait to see to what extent the additional customs duties put in place will be lowered. Or canceled.
