A fire broke out at the Coutances remand center (Manche) on Monday 1is July 2024. According to initial information, the fire was started in a cell by its occupant, around 2 p.m. Although the fire was not serious, the inmates did not need to be evacuated.
The origin of the fire is currently unknown.
Only one neighbor of the cell concerned had to be moved, inconvenienced by the smoke. The inmate who allegedly started the fire, a 34-year-old man, was also inconvenienced, requiring his transport to the area hospital for examination.
When the firefighters arrived, “The prison service had already started to put out the fire,” indicates Guy-Alain Essouala, the sector company commander, present on the scene.
The means of triggering the fire has not yet been determined.
