Three supporters were arrested for making racist insults against Barça players Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Baldé during the “clasico” against Real Madrid on October 26.
These supporters, two adults and a minor, are accused of having “made xenophobic statements that harmed the dignity and moral integrity of the two footballers” during this match, which was held at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, indicates the Spanish police in a press release.
These three people had been filmed “by other supporters” using mobile phones but also “by the television operator holding the broadcasting rights”, which made it possible to identify the location where they were and to identify them, said the police.
These racist insults, accompanied by gestures imitating monkeys, were widely relayed on social networks after the match, won by the Catalan club (4-0). They gave rise to multiple condemnations, particularly within the political class.
Assuring that it “firmly condemns any type of racist, xenophobic or violent behavior”, Real Madrid indicated that it had “opened an investigation to locate and identify the perpetrators of these deplorable and despicable insults, in order to take the appropriate disciplinary and legal measures”.
Common cases
The Spanish Federation also denounced the behavior of the supporters in question and assured “to work for zero tolerance with regard to this social scourge” and “to put an end to violence and insults in sporting sites and events”.
Despite the measures taken by La Liga and the increasingly severe sanctions applied by clubs and authorities, cases of racism are frequent in Spanish football, which still cannot get rid of these behaviors.
