DABIN VIOLINIST ZOEY YANG WINS THE 2024 EUROPEAN PRIZE

Twenty-four candidates participated in the 112e edition of the Prix d’Europe Competition who stood at the Montreal Conservatory of Music from June 3 to 8. The big winner of this 2024 edition is the violinist Dabin Zoey Yang who is awarded the sum of $50,000. This amount will be used to cover the costs of study and training abroad.

The jury was composed of Marie-Danielle Parent (soprano, Prix d’Europe 1980), Carole Sirois (cellist), Jimmy Briere (pianist), Michel Duchesneau (oboist and musicologist) and John Rea (composer). Several other prizes were also up for grabs.

Montreal Youth Symphony Orchestra Prize: Dabin Zoey Yang, violin

$1,000 scholarship and invitation as a soloist during the next season. This prize is awarded to the winner of the Prix d’Europe.

Abitibian Tour Price: Dabin Zoey Yang, violin

Recitals in Val d’Or and Amos, accompanied by a $5,500 scholarship.

This prize is awarded to the winner of the Prix d’Europe in collaboration with Val d’Or en concerts and the Théâtre des Eskers.

Monik Grenier Prize:Gabrielle Gagnon-Picard, piano

2 000$- Monik Grenier

Prize awarded to a pianist for the best interpretation of a Quebec work.

Next generation prize:Florence Laurain, flute

$2,000 – Anonymous donor

Prize awarded to a promising young artist.

Prix Claire-Charbonneau-Clerk : Michelle Bawden, soprano

1 000$- Bruno Clerk

Prize awarded to a candidate in singing.

Canadian Music Centre Prize in Quebec: Florence Laurain, flute

Prize awarded for the best interpretation of a work by a Quebec composer approved by the CMCQuébec.

Jean Marchand Prize:Wei-Tang Huang

$1,000 – Jean Marchand

Award given to recognize the excellence of an accompanist.

About the Europe Prize

Since 1911, the Académie de musique du Québec has organized the Prix d’Europe, a prestigious annual competition which awards, in addition to the grand prize, many other scholarships worth a total of nearly $75,000. This competition aims to promote the artistic development of young Quebec musicians and to allow the winner of the Europe Prize to continue their studies outside Quebec. The Prix d’Europe is considered a jewel of Quebec cultural heritage. Several of its winners have led or are leading today a brilliant career, such as Wilfrid Pelletier, Raymond Daveluy, Colette Boky, Jacques Hétu, Chantal Juillet, Valérie Milot, Charles Richard-Hamelin, Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu.
