With VW the celebrate 50 years of Golfthe German brand has just presented the latest stage in the evolution of its bestseller, the mid-cycle update of the eighth generation of the Golf.

The VW icon, which has produced more than 37 million units, is now entering a new chapter in a long history, with a new infotainment system developed from scratch, a latest-generation plug-in hybrid engine and a new design.

The new Golf and the new Golf Variant are therefore distinguished by changes to the front end. The visually defining features of the new Golf are the Volkswagen logo, which is illuminated for the first time in European markets, and the newly designed LED headlights. The top-of-the-range IQ. Light LED matrix headlights feature a new high-performance main beam with a range of up to 500 m. The IQ.Light3D LED rear light clusters on both body versions have also been given a new design.

Inside, the highlight is the newly developed intuitive infotainment system (MIB4) with a separate touchscreen. This is based on illuminated touch bars with optimised ergonomics for controlling temperature and volume.

Also noteworthy is the dashboard with a 10.2″ display, as well as the new improved multifunction steering wheel and the IDA voice assistant, which can be used not only to control functions such as the air conditioning system, telephone or navigation system, but also to access online information from all possible areas – from weather forecasts to general knowledge questions.

The facelifted Golf also offers a series of new driver assistance systems, including Park Assist Plus and Park Assist Pro, which make it easier to maneuver into and out of parking spaces using a smartphone, as well as the new View 360 degree aerial view.

Regarding the engines, the renovated Golf presents some new features, in particular with regard to the plug-in hybrid mechanics which now has a new 1.5 L gasoline engine with a variable geometry turbo, associated with an electric motor powered by with a new battery

of 19.7 kWh usable capacity (previously: 10.6 kWh), which allows a range in 100% electric mode of approximately 140 km. The battery can now be charged at a home charging station and at other AC charging points with 11 kW (previously 3.6 kW).

In addition to the plug-in hybrid variant, the Golf also offers 48 V mild-hybrid units, which in the case of the eHybrid version develop a power of 204 hp, while the sporty version, the GTE, develops a power of 272 hp. In both mild-hybrid versions, power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to electrified variants, the restyled Golf still offers combustion engines. The entry version is equipped with a 115 hp 1.5 TSI engine with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Still in gasoline, we note the GTI version equipped with a 2.0 TSI 265 hp engine coupled to a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The versions with Diesel engine are both equipped with the well-known 2.0 TDI engine, with two power levels: 115 hp with a six-speed manual gearbox and 150 hp with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. As for prices, VW has already announced that the renewed Golf range starts from €28,620
