The president of the rebellious group in the National Assembly Mathilde Panot spoke on BFMTV of the possible censorship of Michel Barnier's government, within the framework of discussions on the budget which could result in a 49.3.
La France insoumise prepares for the aftermath of Michel Barnier. While a censorship of the government by deputies could take place in December as part of the budget vote, the president of the LFI group in the National Assembly Mathilde Panot is confident in the fact that the Prime Minister “will fall and be defeated” , as she said this Sunday, November 24 on BFMTV.
After that, she believes that “there will only be two choices left for the President of the Republic: appoint Lucie Castets (…) or leave”.
The NFP “has a budget that is ready”
The member for Val-de-Marne thus recalls that the former financial director of Paris town hall remains the candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP) for Matignon and that the left-wing coalition “has a budget that is ready”, recalling by elsewhere that parliamentary discussions on this subject could last “until the end of January”.
In an interview published this Saturday in Le Parisien, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon affirms that if the budget proposed by the Barnier government is not voted on by Parliament in the coming weeks, France “takes the risk of a Greek scenario”. A threat rejected en bloc, therefore, by the rebels and Mathilde Panot.
To censor the government of Michel Barnier, the left is counting on a probable use by the government of article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows the adoption of the text without a vote in the National Assembly, because there is no majority at present to vote on the budget. Michel Barnier declared on November 14 that he will “probably” have to use 49.3 to pass the text.
Will the RN vote for censorship?
Not holding an absolute majority on its own, the NFP will however need the support of other deputies, for example those of the National Rally who refuse at this stage to censor the government.
On Wednesday, Marine Le Pen assured that she was seriously considering censorship: “We will not accept that the purchasing power of the French is further reduced. It is a red line. If this red line is exceeded, we will vote for censorship.” Monday, on BFMTV, Jordan Bardella affirmed that the decision to vote for censorship had not yet been decided within the far-right party but the government is “taking the path”.
Despite these assertions from Marine Le Pen, Mathilde Panot wants to see “in action what will be done, because we already know that this budget wants to make the French pay”.
The Prime Minister must receive this Monday at Matignon the boss of the RN deputies, but also Mathilde Panot and Éric Ciotti, to try to find an agreement which would allow the adoption of the budget.
