Almost three weeks after the deadly floods of October 29 which left 228 dead in Spain, Valencia CF played its first home match on Saturday November 23, hosting Real Betis for the 14th day of La Liga. The opportunity for the beloved club, with its supporters, to pay tribute to the victims.
The Valencian Community flag was placed in the center of the field before kick-off. The players and referees gathered around for a moment of reflection. At the same time, a large tifo was deployed in the stands to display the colors of the region. Then a large banner was unfurled in the side stand with the names of the municipalities in the region and the message: “Come on Valencia, united forever!”

43,975 spectators were at the stadium for this match, according to Valence CF. “The ticketing of the match will contribute to the return of sporting and educational activities for the boys and girls affected by the floods,” the club said.
“Football has returned to Mestalla. And it has done so with this well-deserved tribute to all the victims of the flood,” greeted Betis on its X account.
Following the floods, the Spanish football federation postponed the Valencia-Real Madrid championship match which was scheduled for November 2 at Mestalla. But the other matches of the weekend took place despite criticism.
