A brand new control system will be deployed on the highway AP-7between Barcelona and , and more particularly up to the border with the Pyrenees-Orientales. The Generalitat of Catalonia will install high speed weighing stations. We explain how they work.

Trucks will be targeted

Not all motorway users will be affected by this system. As its name suggests, the high-speed weighing station will focus on weight. Here, these are the trucks and the large road complexes which will be targeted.

This will be the largest deployment of weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology in Europe.

Giropes

This system designed by the Giropes company will make it possible to weigh heavy weights who take the AP-7. Installed on gantries, sensors “known for their high precision and reliability” will be responsible for identifying trucks which do not respect the weight limits set by law.

“Towards an automated sanction system”

Trucks identified by the sensors will be directed to areas equipped with low-speed weighing systems. If the weight is confirmed to exceed the permitted limits, shipping companies will incur penalties. sanctions.

This system, estimated at two million euros, is “likely to evolve towards a automated sanction system in the event of violation of the regulations on overloading,” warns Giropes.

Although the installation date has not been revealed, we know that the AP-7 will have three stations. The first will be located at the level of La Jonquera. The second is planned to The Rock of Vallès (the commune which hosts La Roca Village) and the third to Martorellsouth of Barcelona.

A “shock plan” on the AP-7 highway

This system will be accompanied by other measures in the coming months. The Catalan government is preparing a “shock plan” to reduce accidents on an axis that is all too often bereaved. Since the disappearance of tolls, mortality has increased by 60%.

To do this, the installation of new mobile radars is considered. The speed on certain sections of the highway could also be lowered to 100 km/h.
