Legislative elections 2024: “It reopens all avenues”, what Gabriel Attal envisages for his future after the elections

Candidate in the legislative elections, Gabriel Attal is not guaranteed to keep his place at Matignon. Depending on the outcome of the vote, if the presidential majority does not win, Emmanuel Macron should then appoint another Prime Minister.

The announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly by Emmanuel Macron, and consequently of the organization of early legislative elections, had the effect of a hammer blow the day after the European elections. Especially for Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, whose future at Matignon is more than uncertain.

Indeed, depending on the outcome of the vote on July 7, the youngest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic, in office since January 9, 2024, could already have to leave his place, if the presidential majority does not win.

Candidate in Hauts-de-Seine

Mandated by Emmanuel Macron to lead the presidential majority’s campaign in the legislative elections, Gabriel Attal is also a candidate in the tenth constituency of Hauts-de-Seine, in Vanves, where he was elected in 2022 with nearly 60% of the vote against the socialist Cécile Soubelet. Apart from the rise of the RN, he risks being confronted with his short record as Prime Minister.

If he is re-elected as a deputy (an imperative condition for remaining at Matignon) and if the presidential majority manages to block the National Rally, Gabriel Attal can hope to be kept in office by the President of the Republic. On the other hand, in the event of the presidential camp being defeated, Emmanuel Macron should appoint a Prime Minister from the camp that has become the majority in the National Assembly.

Mayor of Paris?

If it is the New Popular Front, Gabriel Attal could find his former ministry of National Education. In the case of a cohabitation with the RN, he would be replaced by Jordan Bardella and should leave his functions for the second round, scheduled for July 7.

What would he do then? “It reopens all avenues”according to “a former government colleague” Quoted by RMCAmong these avenues, our colleagues mention that of taking the lead of a future central group in the National Assembly.

Gabriel Attal could also present his candidacy for mayor of Paris, to which “he would not have given up”. Finally, he could also take a step back as Edouard Philippe did before him, in order to better come back later with a possible new party or new ambitions for 2027.
