After a gloomy spring, the return of the sun is ideal for swimming and, for water sports enthusiasts, scuba diving.
This is a good timing since Mido is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its Ocean Star model in 2024 and has offered us since the beginning of the year, to celebrate this jubilee as it should be, some very nice models, the latest of which was just unveiled yesterday: the Ocean Star 39.
Mido celebrates in 2024 the 80th anniversary of the Ocean Star
Fans of high-end diving watches at reasonable prices know this: Mido is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its Ocean Star diving watch in 2024.
The Ocean Star actually appeared in the Mido catalogue in 1944 – and not in 1959 as is often written, although 1959 marked the launch of an Ocean Star with a monocoque case.
The expertise of the house founded in 1918 in Switzerland in the field of waterproofing nevertheless does not date from this period.
It dates back to the 1930s when Mido developed a system called Aquadura – a cork crown seal system that makes the case of watches equipped with it airtight and waterproof.
The Ocean Star will be a great success with enthusiasts and will be available in numerous versions over time.
One of Mido’s strengths lies in its ability to alternate models inspired by the past, with a vintage look, and contemporary versions.
Among the firsts, we can mention the Mido Ocean Star Tribute launched in 2019 and the Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer unveiled in 2023.
In the register of contemporary diving watches, there is the very successful Mido Ocean Star 600 Chronometer with green bezel that appeared last year or the Ocean Star GMT marketed from summer 2020.
As part of the 80th anniversary of its iconic diving watch, Mido has already delivered to us the Ocean Star GMT vintage 2024 – a limited series inspired by the past, really very nice with its vintage look, a GMT function, 80 hours of battery life and two bracelets.
It was last March.
In May, the Swiss brand took us into the future with the stunning Ocean Star 200C Carbon – a model combining a carbon fibre composite case and dial, a ceramic bezel, a chronometer-certified movement delivering 80 hours of power reserve and two bracelets.
