Given the results, we couldn’t miss this survey… The assets of the advertising and media sectors would be the most superstitious assets in the big cities of France, with nearly 80% of them considering themselves superstitious. Next come chefs (77%) and bankers (75%). Teachers are at the bottom of the table, with only 6% who define themselves as superstitious – which is reassuring. And more reassuring than the result among social workers (51%).

Here are the top 10 most superstitious professions (but we advise you to read the following table) :

But is this result reliable?

The question is worth asking because, to compare professions with each other, the sample sizes must be robust or at least consistent for each of the professions questioned. The minimum threshold used in this study for a profession to be published is 20 respondents (for a total sample of 1515 inhabitants, active or not). The results from the media/advertising sector correspond to 22 respondents. If there had been 19 people from the media/advertising sector in the sample, they would not have been published. We calculated the margin of error of the confidence interval (at 95%) for the 80% rate of superstitious people and we obtained a margin of 17 points. Which means that when it is said that there are 80% superstitious among advertising/media workers, the reality is rather between 63% and 97%! Which remains high. But there is some room to conclude that advertising/media assets are the most superstitious assets. What is certain is that they are more so than the teachers!

Pubards would avoid going under a ladder

According to the same study, the most common superstitions in the advertising and media sector are:

  1. Walk underneath a ladder
  2. Break a mirror
  3. Putting bread on the table upside down
  4. Open an umbrella indoors
  5. Friday the 13th

But again, this ranking was only established on 22 respondents. It is best to check with your colleagues before using these results.

Methodology of the Top10DesCasinos survey: From April 15 to 19, 2024, 1,515 residents of 15 of the most populous cities in France were surveyed, who had lived there for at least a year. To determine the most superstitious professions, respondents specified whether they believed in a list of 33 positive and negative superstitions. The general classification was made based on an average of two percentages: that of people who believed in at least one negative superstition and that of people who believed in at least one positive superstition.
