RTX 5090: an elite graphics card for the elite
A little over a month ago, at the beginning of October, Tom from the channel Moore’s Law Is Dead mentioned staggering pricing for the upcoming GeForce RTX 50 Series: he was counting on amounts between $1,999 and $2,499 for the RTX 5090, between $1,199 and $1,499 for the RTX 5080, and between $599 and $699 for the RTX 5070 (so very wide ranges, in particular for both first). These allegations were, however, quickly contested by other disclosers.
New estimates for this generation’s flagship Blackwell provide some clarity; they suggest that the amounts suggested by Tom were certainly overestimated, but indicative of the trend.
Now the new trendy amount is $1,900. It was originally mentioned by account Bits And Chips then taken over by the site OC3D. We do not know the track record of this source, and we will therefore refrain from gauging its reliability.
That said, at the end of October, I_Leak_VN, a leaker considered reliable, announced a price of around $2,000 for the RTX 5090. It is therefore likely that we are well in those waters.
To refresh your memory, the GeForce RTX 4090 was released for $1,599; at 1,949 euros. Suffice to say that even taking into account the fluctuation of exchange rates and taking the lowest estimate to date ($1,899), the hypothesis of a GeForce RTX 5090 sold at least at the same price as its ancestor seems more and more illusory. In euros, it is likely that the initial pricing will easily exceed 2,000 euros.
NVIDIA has free reign on the high end
Everyone will weigh the merits of spending so much on a graphics card; as always, everything depends on one’s means, priorities and interests. But for its part, NVIDIA would be wrong to deprive itself. Intel like AMD will skip the very high end with their Battlemage and Radeon RX 8000 GPUs; the GeForces will therefore have no competition in this segment, and the RTX 5090 promises to be monstrous. Add to this the end of the production of RTX 4090 GPUs which began a few weeks ago, which has made this reference almost impossible to find at “suitable” prices, and you understand that everything agrees to have an RTX 5090 sold at a high price. .
The company will certainly formalize the first GeForce RTX 50 Series at the beginning of January: Jensen Huang, its CEO, will speak on the CES stage on January 6 at 7 p.m. (i.e. the night of the 7th Paris time). According to rumors, NVIDIA will deploy its catalog ranging from the RTX 5090 to the RTX 5060 in just three months; at least, we wouldn’t have to wait very long to have cheaper GeForce alternatives.
