Domenico Tedesco is in turmoil. Not only because his choices and tactics are contested but also because some of his statements go down badly.
Successor to Roberto Martinez at the head of the Red Devils, Tedesco had nevertheless started his mission on the right foot. However, a first significant incident quickly tarnished his mandate: the conflict with Thibaut Courtois. The latter decided to no longer play for the Red Devils as long as Tedesco remains in office, and this affair continues to haunt the coach.
Then, the failure at the Euro made the situation worse. Tedesco recognized this failure at the end of August, promising improvements for the League of Nations. However, this was far from being the case. Belgium even narrowly avoided direct relegation from the highest division of this competition.
“Better now than after the Euro”
Game-wise, progress was also non-existent. The recent double clash against Italy and Israel was the culmination of a series of disappointing performances. The situation seems to be getting worse, but Tedesco seems to see things differently. “We are better now than after the Euro,” the coach recently said.
This statement provoked a strong reaction from Philippe Albert. “He takes people for idiots,” he told SudPresse. “Even those who know little about football and follow the national team from afar cannot accept this. You collect only 4 points out of 18, even though you face Israel twice.”
Tedesco also claimed to always be the man for the job. A statement that leaves Albert skeptical:
“Being ambitious and wanting to move forward is good. But this statement goes completely against the results. He must understand that he is lucky to still hold this position,” concluded the former international and analyst.
