French President Emmanuel Macron denounced on Tuesday an “escalatory” posture of Russia in the war in Ukraine, calling “for reason” Vladimir Putin, who signed a decree the same day expanding his possibilities of using nuclear weapons .
“Here I really want to call Russia to reason. She has responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council,” the head of state told journalists after a G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. “Russia today is becoming a power of global destabilization,” he accused.
Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed his wish to end this war and hopes that a peace agreement will be found between the two countries “in 2025”. “For there to be peace in the region, there must be reciprocal guarantees (…) non-aggression mechanisms on one side and others,” he continued.
Aware that territorial questions will be at the heart of this possible agreement, the Head of State recalls that it “is not up to us to decide for Ukraine and for Russia”. “The question is what are we prepared to do to make sure that Ukraine is not attacked again? What commitments must be made? What security guarantees on a bilateral scale? “, he then listed.
The President of the Republic also assured that he had spoken with his Chinese counterpart. “I called on President Xi Jinping to use all his weight, his pressure, his negotiating capacity towards President Putin so that he stops the attacks,” he reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree on Tuesday expanding the possibilities of using nuclear weapons, just after the United States authorized kyiv to strike Russian soil with its long-range missiles.
