At the end of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia's posture, which he described as “escalatory”.

While Moscow announced that it was expanding its possibilities of using nuclear weapons, the French president called on “Russia to reason.”

He said the country was “becoming a global destabilizing power.”

Emmanuel Macron called for de-escalation. During a press conference at the end of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the French president denounced the “escalatory posture” of Russia. In reaction to Moscow's decision to expand its possibilities of resorting to nuclear weapons, the leader called “President Putin has reason and his responsibilities, that of Russia, its people and its leaders.”

“An unprecedented nuclear posture”

Russia “has responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. It has made the very serious choice of not respecting the Charter of the United Nations while nevertheless being a permanent member of its Security Council”, insisted Emmanuel Macron. Citing both the arrival of North Korean soldiers on European soil and its adoption “an unprecedented nuclear posture”the French president estimated that Russia “is today becoming a global destabilizing power.”

Furthermore, questioned about a possible resolution of the conflict in Ukraine in 2025, on this 1000th day of war, Emmanuel Macron assured: “Our aspiration is that of peace”. He justified “helps him to resist” from because Ukraine “is the victim of a war of aggression”. “We want peace, but peace which is not capitulation”continued the French president, referring to negotiations which would make it possible to “settle territorial issues”, “which enshrine respect for international law” and which bring to Ukraine “security guarantees”.

“That peace comes in 2025 is what we all want. It depends first of all on Russia and that it stops bombing, killing, invading”summarized Emmanuel Macron. If the French president did not take a position on territorial issues, he put forward the need to decide to “security guarantees to ensure stability in Ukraine and to be sure that it is no longer attacked.”

Faced with the threats expressed by Russia, Emmanuel Macron also announced that he had asked the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, during a bilateral meeting, in parallel with the G20, to “to weigh with all one's weight” with Vladimir Putin. “I think it’s important for us to raise this subject and call on China to help us with this de-escalation”wished the president.
