The Meyer chocolate shop was destroyed even though it had just been completely renovated.
The terrible fire of October 30 in the old town of Annecy cost the life of a woman, but the disaster also caused significant damage. Testimony from the Meyer chocolate factory installed in the building ravaged by the flames.
A store that was brand new
It is also a real blow for the trade, in particular the Meyer chocolate factory. 15 months after having had a makeover, and before the big end-of-year holiday season which is coming, the store located on Place Saint-François de Sales could have to close its doors for almost a year. And for good reason, commerce was largely ravaged by the fire that occurred in the old town of Annecy on October 30.
The biggest damage comes from water, not fire
However, it was not the flames which ravaged the business, but rather the extinguishing water deployed by the firefighters. More than 700 kilos of chocolate had to be thrown away. The work still promises to be a long time before we can hope for a reopening, especially since the sector still remains inaccessible by municipal decree.
Specific harm currently being assessed
The damage is currently estimated between 300,000 and 600,000 euros. Annecy chocolatiers hope that insurance will be able to cover the losses. In the meantime, the Meyer chocolate factory still has its laboratory and its shop in Poisy.
Solidarity between traders
To save the holiday season a little, the chocolate maker is setting up a click and collect system thanks to other traders who have agreed to help the Meyer family.
