The Gabonese overwhelmingly approved the military regime’s draft new constitution. According to the authorities, the “yes” vote won with 91.80% of the votes.
The Gabonese overwhelmingly approved the new Constitution during the referendum of November 16, 2024. According to the provisional results published by the Ministry of the Interior, the “yes” won with 91.8% of the votes, against 8.2%. for “no”. According to the authorities, the participation rate was 53.54%.
Indeed, this referendum, organized by the military regime of General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, marks a major turning point for the country. The new Constitution establishes a strong presidential system, with a presidential term of seven years renewable only once. The president will be able to dissolve the Assembly once per term, while Parliament will have the power to impeach him.
This overwhelming victory reinforces the regime of General Brice Oligui Nguema who had promised to return power to civilians after the coup d’état of August 30, 2023.
