This Sunday, November 17, it has already been a year since the Frieden-Bettel government has been in power in Luxembourg. The opportunity for RTL to take stock.
After 10 years in opposition, the CSV returned to government on November 17, 2023. The DP, for its part, remained in the majority but lost the post of Prime Minister. A year has passed: can we consider that the government has found its bearings? A question to which not all Luxembourg politicians answer in the same way.
Let’s start with the representatives of the majority parties. We see, unsurprisingly, that the criticisms do not rain. Praising and defending the government is almost part of the job description of majority MP. The leader of the DP fraction, Gilles Baum, emphasized the work accomplished.
“I find that a lot of things have been accomplished. This government naturally needed a little time to find its feet but it still managed to bring people together. I am thinking in particular of the round tables on energy, agriculture and housing. We must also mention the measures that have already been put in place, particularly in the area of housing. We know that this is a central problem, just like poverty in Luxembourg. It obviously takes a little time for these measures to take effect. .”
Sluggish start, but on the right path
The new coalition seems to have decided to continue in the wake of the social policy pursued over the last ten years. Gilles Baum recalls in this context that people receiving Revis will soon be automatically entitled to the energy tax credit. Marc Spautz, ex-unionist and current leader of the CSV fraction, also insisted on the importance of social policy. In his eyes, the government is on the right path, despite a sluggish start.
“I think the government is doing a good job. We still saw a real change in governance. Previously, we would probably have continued with the majority who were there but now she really found herself. This explains the lag time this government experienced before finding its rhythm. Adapting the tax scale to inflation was a good example of a measure that is good for citizens. At the ‘energy’ and ‘housing’ tables, the priorities have clearly been determined.“
As for the Pirates, who do not belong to the majority, we draw a rather positive assessment. Marc Goergen was kind enough to speak on the microphone RTL.
“The first assessment is rather positive. The new government has succeeded in establishing a good dynamic. There are obviously measures that we like more than others. Tax policy for example. We are of the opinion that the middle class must really be relieved and this was not the case with the previous coalition We are in agreement with the CSV-DP government on this point. There are other subjects such as the ban on begging where we do not. we don’t share the same opinion. so a little mixed.“
If the Ministers of Finance, Gilles Roth, and of Agriculture, Martine Hansen, have “won points”, this is not the case for everyone. The Ministers of the Environment, Serge Wilmes, and of the Interior, Leon Gloden, have been the subject of criticism.
The beginnings of the Minister of the Interior have left something to be desired if we are to believe Marc Spautz and Gilles Baum. The leader of the DP fraction also criticized the communication of the Minister of Labor and the Minister of Sports Georges Mischo. In this context, he stressed that the work of a minister was very different from that of a mayor.
