Diplomacy is active on Saturday November 16 in the context of the war in Ukraine. The telephone line is open again between Berlin and Moscow, while the position that Donald Trump will choose against Vladimir Putin remains unknown.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke by telephone with Vladimir Putin. The line had been cut for two years between Europe and Moscow. “I called on him to end Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and withdraw its troops“, declared Olaf Scholz. The question of resuming a dialogue with Moscow has arisen since the election of Donald Trump to the White House, who during his campaign promised that he would end the war in 24 hours.
To have influence during negotiations with Russia, Europe will have to get involved. “Without the American leader, it is generally extremely difficult to reach agreement within a European framework. It will rather rely on smaller coalitions”analyzes Jean-Sylvestre Mongrenier, associate researcher at the Thomas-Marie Institute. Ukraine, for its part, denounces the resumption of contact between Germany and Russia, but says it is ready to resolve the conflict diplomatically.
Moscow is demanding to recover the areas conquered since the start of the war, almost 18% of Ukrainian territory. Inadmissible for kyiv, regardless of international pressure.
