An Ottawa resident has pleaded guilty to failing to control a fire near Calabogie in June 2023.
The fire, started on a private island in Centennial Lake, quickly spread over almost 45 hectares of forested area, forcing nearby residents to evacuate their homes.
An investigation established that the fire was indeed of human origin.
The man was ordered to pay $35,000 to the province in restitution, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed Friday. He pleaded guilty under the provincial Forest Fire Prevention Act.
Remember that at the time of the incident, a provincial fire ban was already in effect in the area concerned due to the high risk of fire.
