More security
This news could then reassure the most anxious. Indeed, WeChat – owned by the Chinese Tencent, particularly in terms of security – now supports passwords on its iOS application (and on iPad?). Recently, WhatsApp also announced that authentication via passkeys was being deployed on the iPhone App (the function has already been available for several months on Android).
It is thus possible to connect to an account using Face ID, Touch ID or the unlock code of a compatible Apple device (from iPhone 8/X and iOS 16 minimum). Passkeys rely on secure device enclaves and biometric recognition. This technology thus allows more secure access to accounts than traditional passwords because it prevents the interception of a code sent by SMS, or password theft.
For the moment, Meta still has no plans to transpose WhatsApp to the iPad and you will have to make do with either the web app or a third-party application, precisely like WeChat. Strengthening security could then prove to be excellent news.
A PASSWORD-FREE FUTURE THANKS TO PASSKEYS
With passkeys, a technology developed by the FIDO Alliance which includes companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft, users will actually be able to consider the secure use of a service without having to enter a password.
It will indeed be possible to replace the traditional password and two-factor authentication with a token which will be stored within the secure enclave of your device, and which will be summoned at the time of authentication via Touch ID or Face ID (on Apple products).
