Mont-Dore has been engulfed in flames since Thursday. This Friday, November 15, the fire is still raging and the affected area is located between Pic Kou and the Saint-Louis reserve. Firefighters, police and civil security are still on the scene.
Since early yesterday evening, a fire has been underway at Mont-Dore near Pic Kou and the Saint-Louis reserve. As the fire is located between the slopes of the left flank of Saint-Louis and the right flank of La Coulée, a difference in “typography and relief” makes it “difficult to access”. A “dozen houses” is threatened in “forest habitat interface near the Coulée”.
Currently, there are still areas of active fire at the head of the fire. On site, 21 firefighters are in intervention with “reinforcements from civil security and national firefighters”. “Six 'pump' vehicles, an air support reconnaissance group, a water bomber helicopter and two vehicles are also deployed.. “The police are also on the scene”according to information from Eddy Aita, head of the Mont-Dore fire department.
Firefighters took turns to bring the fire under control during the night from Thursday to Friday. At 1 a.m., the fire “had diminished greatly”. From 5:30 a.m., the left flank of Saint-Louis was taken by “flames a hundred meters high”. Since this afternoon, there have been “a resumption of hot spots on the lower right flank”. To date, there has been no surface survey making it possible to estimate the number of hectares affected throughout New Caledonia.
